Singapore Elections : SDP Rally

  • Opposition lunchtime rally at Raffles Place going on now. Incredible crowd.
  • Think PAP in for a big shock. Too late for them to do anything about it now. General public has too much pent-up resentment from years of being treated like idiots by the Government. PAP has no divine right to government.
  • PM apology for mistakes may be sincere, but timing completely off. Coming right in the middle of election campaign (and not immediately after mistakes made), is seen by most as mere election posturing.
  • Good summary of what's wrong here. Read this as well to get a good feel of the thoughts of a typical Singapore man in the street.

TS, is your trading getting side-tracked by elections ;-)

I understand why some Singaporeans complain about the PAP, but any other country would love to have a govt as efective, efficient and uncorrupt as Singapore has. Of course they're human too, but on balance you guys have a great thing going for you in Singapore.
Guess its just human nature to want a change, even if for the worse.

In other countries politicians go away when they leave office. In Singapore they hang around and pay themselves $3 mio a year and threaten people with repentance if they vote for the Opposition. Wtf?

TS, I understand your frustration, truly. But Singaporeans should do a comparable analysis of the good-bad of their govt / system vs what exists elsewhere in the world. You guys have been spoilt by good govt, you don't know how bad life is when govt is bad. I am Indian, have lived in Hong Kong and Australia. And I have done a pretty in depth study on my own of government systems throughout history and modern times. Democracy is rule by the mob, and pure democracy invariably leads to a lowest common denominator society dominated by a cabal of oligarchs and TPTB. Similar to the US today. The other extreme is a tyrannical dictatorship or monarchy. The middle ground is a benevolent dictatorship or a constrained democracy. Singapore is the latter. What matters is the quality of governance, and people should not let the human frailties of the govt leaders obscure the delivered quality of governance. You guys should take a look at the bigger historical picture, and you will count yourself lucky that you live in Singapore and have such an excellent government.
If you are referring to LKY paying himself $3m in retirement, it is a small price to pay in the big picture. And I'd say he fully deserves it. By making the rewards of good governance attractive, the system attracts high calibre people into govt. Unlike India, where only thugs and the lowest of lows go into govt, because the educated elite find politics unrewarding.
Just think, what exactly do Singaporeans want in their govt? And will the opposition provide as good a government? I honestly doubt it.

Don't get me wrong. I fully appreciate what the Government here has achieved and I know how lucky we are. I am from Malaysia originally and I know what bad Govt looks like.

What I support is more Opposition MPs in Parliament (currently its 84 vs 2) to give the people a stronger voice and hold the Govt accountable.

I am torn between wanting better Opposition representation and BG Yeo remaining a Minister.
