My iPhone and iPad Apps

Friend asked me for my recommended Apps just now. This is the list I prepared. * denotes must have (the more * the more important for me personally). All are free except for GoodReader (US$4.99) :=

For both iPhone and iPad
  • ****Dropbox : Must have for multi-device owners. Keeps files in synch on all devices+cloud. Access to files via Apps and/or internet browser. Shared folders with invited friends very useful too (for files too large to email).
  •  ***MobileRSS : News feed reader. Very easy once you have your Google Reader RSS feeds set up.
  •  ***Stanza : For reading e-Books. By far the best eBook reader. Highly customizable to suit personal tastes. Has drag and drop books via iTunes option not available in iBooks.
  • *Find My iPhone : Setup all Apple devices with your iTunes account ID. App locates where each device is and give you the ability to send a message to the remote device, or wipe out the entire contents of the lost device.
  • *Google Authenticator : 2 Factor Authentication (just like internet banking) to protect your Gmail account. Not advisable for beginners as it can be very confusing to use.
  • *Remote :  Remote control over iTunes library in playing on computer.
  • **Swiss Forex : Versions for both. Live FX rates + charts customizable to a certain extent.
  • Shazam : Identify title and artist of song being played in background.
  • Pad Info : Quick access to iPad memory and disk usage so you know when you are overloading and need to close some Apps.
  • VLC : This used to be free. Can open most video file formats. But I could not locate it in the App Store when I tried to install for CL just now. Will investigate further. Anyone know of a good alternative please let me know (free would be better).
  • Radio Singapore : Listen to most of the Spore radio stations.
  • SMRT Book a Taxi.
  • Trafficam (2 versions - iPad and iPhone). Up to date photos of traffic conditions on all our major expressways.
  • iChangi : Flight info.
  • **Air Drive :  For wireless file transfers from computer to mobile devices over WiFi. Works surprisingly well and fast. But only transfers 1 file at at time. (Addendum 16Aug11).
 For iPad only
  •  ****GoodReader : Best PDF reader and document manager out of all the ones (many!) I have tried. Syncs with Dropbox too. Must have if you want store lots of documents and reports in your iPad. Ability to setup and manage file directories. (Very good for managing my music scores). Also edit PDF docs.
  • **Bamboo Paper : Quick and dirty way to scribble notes with finger. Email from within App either as an image or entire notebook as a PDF document.
  • **Bloomberg for iPad : Best for financial market news and prices. iPhone version not so good.
  • **iChromy : Based on Google Chrome browser. This is a much better web-browser than the Apple Safari. Tabbed browsing. (Since re-named **Diigo Browser).
  • **App Hits for iPad : Great for discovering new apps by all sorts of cross referencing criteria (categories, ranking, etc over different periods to time).
  •  *CloudReaders : Good free alternative to GoodReader. But no ability to organise files into directories so navigation is a pain if you have lots of files. There is a tagging feature which reduces the problem a bit.
  • MyPad : User friendly free App to access Facebook.
  • ScratchWork : For serious note-making. Can have notepad and internet page side by side view and easy cut-and-paste from former to latter.
  • ***iChartist Pro :  Charts of most of my traded markets (Addendum 16Aug11).
  • iSwifter : For watching sites requiring flash (does not work on all sites).
For iPhone only
  • *WhatsApp : Free SMS+IM over WiFi.
  • Viber : Free SMS and phone calls over WiFI. I can't get used to the lags though.

I find the iPhone screen size too small to handle PDF documents so I generally prefer to do PDFs on iPad.

Thus all my PDF eBooks are converted into ePub format to facilitate easy reading on both iPhone and iPad.

Good conversion tools : 1. Calibre 2. Hamster.
