Paul McGrath: 'I'd hold my breath in games so they could not smell the drink'

From the Daily Mail.

"But I was in a mess on occasions. I’d go on to the pitch having had a few drinks. On one particularly bad time, I fell over the ball while taking a free-kick during a pre-season game."

Today is the 5th anniversary of the passing of my friend Selvarajan Neelakandan (1961-2005), a giant of a character who loved a drink or few, just like McGrath. Many a morning he would turn up for work and the rest of us would have to hold our breath to avoid getting high on alcohol fumes. Truly truly miss him. My world is a poorer place without him. Selva - RIP.

Time really flies. Still hurts thinking about how sudden it happened, especially to a close friend who sat next to me at work.

Definitely a poorer place without Selva. As long as we are around he won't be forgotten

Yup. Best YEN FRA trader in the Far East who called the BOJ ODR cut Christmas of 1991; turned down huge dowry and match-making efforts by his Mom; pee'd on KK's bedroom floor after being wasted on a large night out at Khameleon; £120 umbrella and £250 Shure earphones; "living legend in his own mind"; laughter so infectious that you can't help but feel cheered up just hearing.

And I used to wonder why he would spend 4 figure sums on carpets to step and puke on. Glad he did enjoy life to the fullest.

Can't believe that it has been five years since the shocking news came. Can still remember his cute smile when he called "Miss Woo"!It's so sad!

When sober a gentleman of girth and taste; inebriated, a gentle man of mirth, his death a waste.
