"They" Know ...

I am not one to usually subscribe to conspiracy theories but consider the following :=
  • My blog traffic data (daily and historical) is captured by Google Analytics.
  • This new blog gets an average of 50-70 visitors per day. Analytics gives a breakdown of the network location of visitors (server or company name/geographical location) and number of visits from each location (same visitor but multiple visits in a day).
  • After the early days of the initial cutover from Proprietary Trader over to here, blog traffic is fairly stable now, neither growing or shrinking. Core group of readers fairly consistent.
  • On 14Oct09, I noticed 6 visits (all in 1 day) by a new visitor, never before seen here. This is a Top 5 hedge fund in the world. Since then, this hedge fund has not revisited. (I do not have any friends working in this hedge fund).
  • At the time, my 2 big positions were : short GBP/USD and positive on USTs (+short ED calendar spreads).
  • The very next day starts the great unraveling of all the profitable positions I had on. (Cable from 1.5974 to 1.6271 and upwards).
  • Coincidence? I hope so. Paranoia? Maybe. But I can't help shaking off the feeling that I have been representative of "common housewife thinking" and made use of here by greater and powerful forces to confirm crowded trades, a reverse indicator of sorts. What is it that they say about the Greater Fool ...
Addendum 7:18 pm 28Oct09 : Have decide to change the format of the Core Book position table published here to "protect" myself from (likely imagined) unfriendly "watchers". Individual EAR percentages removed so no indication of relative position sizes going forward.

Does google analytics also capture the bloggers that follow you via reader.google.com? Because i don't physically visit the site, but mostly read your post via google reader...

No it does not. I think the only idea I have of readership via direct RSS feeds (eg Google Reader) is the Feedburner icon near the bottom of the right hand panel (where it currrently says "30 readers by Feedburner".

Hi TS, how can you be sure it is a particular hedge fund? I thought Analytics can only show you the ip address and location of ISP, not the domain name of the visitor. Perhaps somebody told them about you as an example of a successful private trader and perhaps they want to head-hunt you !!

And anyway, GBP has now retraced about 50% of that move. GBP is a volatile currency to trade always, more speculators than real users.

I hope it will eventually come good for you, just stick to your rules !!

Just a thought: you could make this a private / by invitation blog only, and disable the search engine crawl feature so random people on the internet cannot find you.

To see domain name under Google Analytics : go to Visitors / Network Properties / Network Location.

My blog registered visitors from a prominent futures exchange and an investment bank last few days too. Probably just some employees taking time off for personal surfing.
